Practical AI Prompting for Financial Analysts

How to safely use Large Language Models to extract structured financial data, audit spreadsheet logic, and synthesize lengthy regulatory filings.

1. Never Ask for Raw Math—Ask for Code or Logic

LLMs predict language tokens; they do not calculate arithmetic reliably in natural text. Prompting an LLM with “Calculate the 5-year CAGR of these revenues” risks confident hallucinations.

The Fix: Prompt the model to write deterministic formulas or scripts. Use prompts like: “Write an exact Excel formula using INDEX/MATCH and CAGR logic to calculate this from columns C and G,” or run it through an environment with code execution enabled.

2. Zero-Shot vs. Few-Shot Data Extraction

When pulling numbers out of earnings transcripts or 10-Ks, open-ended questions like “What were the key drivers?” yield generic summaries.

The Fix: Provide a strict schema in your prompt:

Extract line items from this excerpt into a table with 3 columns: [Metric Name, Q3 Value, YoY % Change]. Do not infer or extrapolate numbers not directly quoted.

3. Privacy and Data Air-Gapping

Never paste identifiable material non-public information (MNPI), customer records, or proprietary employee salaries into public consumer AI models.

The Protocol: Anonymize your tables before analysis (replace company and project names with generic placeholders like Project_Alpha and Dept_01) or utilize enterprise private instances where data is not retained for training.
